Fortnite Returns to Mobile: Epic games Store Lands on Android, Shaking Up the Ecosystem
Table of Contents
The mobile gaming landscape just experienced a seismic shift. After a years-long legal battle with Google, Fortnite is back on Android – and it’s arriving with a twist: the Epic Games Store. This isn’t just a game returning to your phone; it’s a direct challenge to the established power of the Google Play store, and a potential turning point for how we access mobile games.Let’s dive into what this means for you,the gamer, and the future of mobile gaming.
The Epic Legal Battle: A timeline of Events
The story begins in 2020 when epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, took a bold step to circumvent Google’s and Apple’s 30% commission fees on in-app purchases. They introduced a direct payment option within Fortnite, allowing players to buy V-bucks (the game’s currency) directly from Epic, bypassing the app store fees.
This move, predictably, didn’t sit well with either tech giant. Both Apple and Google swiftly removed Fortnite from their respective app stores. What followed was a protracted legal battle, filled with accusations of anti-competitive practices and arguments over the control of digital marketplaces.
While the legal fight with Apple continues, the dispute with Google has reached a critically important turning point. A recent court ruling sided with Epic, finding that Google’s Play Store practices were anti-competitive. This ruling paved the way for Fortnite’s return – but not through the Play Store.
The Epic Games Store on Android: A New Era?
Instead of re-listing Fortnite on the Google Play Store, Epic Games is launching its own dedicated Android app, the Epic Games Store. This is a huge deal. It marks the first time the Epic Games Store will be available on mobile, offering a curated selection of games directly to Android users.
what does this mean for you?
More choice: You’ll have another platform to discover and download games.
Potentially Lower Prices: Epic has a history of offering competitive pricing and deals.
Direct Relationship with Developers: The Epic Games Store fosters a more direct connection between players and game creators.
Bypassing Google’s fees: Developers on the Epic Games Store avoid the 30% commission charged by the Google Play Store, potentially leading to more investment in game growth.
