Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG) has issued warnings to individuals whose accounts were targeted by cyberattacks, with evidence linking teh activity to Intellexa, a European company specializing in surveillance technology. These alerts indicate potential attempts to compromise accounts with spyware, often acquired through third-party exploit chains.
Intellexa, based in Greece and Cyprus, develops and sells surveillance tools, including the Predator spyware. According to reporting by Reuters, the company sometimes purchases exploit chains – collections of software tools used to hack into systems – from third-party vendors. Reuters reported on December 7,2024,that these warnings are not new,and have previously triggered official investigations.
Officials associated with Intellexa have not responded to requests for comment.Previous instances of similar warnings have prompted investigations, notably within the European Union, after high-ranking officials were identified as targets of spyware.
The Impact of Spyware Warnings
John Scott-railton, a researcher at the Canadian Citizen Lab, told Reuters that these notifications represent a notable financial burden for those engaged in internet espionage. The Citizen Lab is a multidisciplinary research laboratory based at the University of Toronto, focusing on the intersection of details, security, and human rights.
Scott-Railton emphasized that the alerts frequently enough serve as the initial step in a series of investigations that could lead to accountability for the misuse of spyware. He stated, as reported by Reuters, that these warnings “cost Internet spies a lot of money.”
Digital security experts believe the increasing frequency of these warnings signals a growing trend of targeted cyberattacks. The primary targets include journalists, activists, politicians, and individuals whose professions make them attractive to governments or commercial espionage firms.
Who is Intellexa?
Intellexa is a relatively new player in the surveillance technology market, but has quickly gained notoriety for its aggressive sales tactics and the capabilities of its Predator spyware. Predator is reportedly capable of extracting vast amounts of data from compromised devices, including messages, photos, and location data. Amnesty international published a report in July 2023 detailing the capabilities and use of Predator spyware.
The company’s connections to the broader spyware industry and its reliance on third-party exploit chains raise concerns about the potential for misuse and the difficulty of tracking the origin of attacks.
