Apple Expands India Retail Presence Amid Trade Tensions
Apple is strengthening it’s commitment to the Indian market by opening a third retail store in Bengaluru. The store will be located in Phoenix Mall of Asia, according to the Business Standard. This move comes as apple navigates increasing trade friction between the U.S. and China.
The new Bengaluru store will occupy about 8,000 square feet on the mall’s first floor. While similar in size to Apple’s Delhi location,it is indeed smaller than the Mumbai flagship store, which covers more than 20,800 square feet.
The lease agreement spans 10 years and includes a revenue-sharing arrangement. Apple will pay 2% of the store’s revenue for the first three years, with the percentage increasing to 2.5% afterward.
CEO Tim Cook has confirmed plans for further expansion, with four new retail stores planned for India, including locations in Pune, Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, and Bengaluru. Apple’s first two stores in India opened in Mumbai and Delhi in 2023.
This retail expansion in India occurs during a period of escalating trade tensions. Apple is shifting its manufacturing focus, with India playing a more prominent role.
“For the June quarter, we do expect the majority of iPhones sold in the U.S. will have India as their country of origin, and Vietnam to be the country of origin for almost all iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and AirPods products also sold in the U.S. China woudl continue to be the country of origin for the vast majority of total product sales outside the U.S.”
