The new processor debuts inside the redesigned Mac mini starting at $899, which launches on Tuesday, September 22. The advanced 2nm fabrication node packs greater transistor density into a smaller physical die size.
Technical Specifications and Performance Gains of the 2nm M6
The M6 chip introduces a larger and more powerful 12-core CPU layout, which delivers an increase of two cores compared to the previous-generation M5 processor. Apple states that the processor achieves the world’s fastest single-threaded performance alongside up to 1.2 times faster multithreaded performance than the M5. When stacked against the older M1 chip, the new processor reaches up to 2.4 times faster multithreaded output. Graphics capabilities also see a substantial upgrade with a 12-core GPU, marking another two-core increase over the M5 architecture.
Enhanced AI Capabilities and Memory Bandwidth
The integrated graphics processing unit delivers nearly a 30 percent increase in peak GPU compute for artificial intelligence workloads compared to the M5. That figure expands to more than 8 times the compute capacity of the M1, resulting in significantly faster prompt processing times for on-device large language models. In addition to the GPU enhancements, the M6 introduces a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. System frameworks can automatically utilize both engines at the exact same time, enabling applications to run complex AI models much faster. Memory specifications have similarly scaled upward to support these intensive workloads. The chip supports up to 32GB of unified memory alongside up to 170GB/s of unified memory bandwidth. That bandwidth figure represents a 10 percent increase over the M5 and sits at 2.5 times the throughput offered by the original M1 chip.

Graphics Architecture and Launch Details
Beyond raw artificial intelligence processing, the updated GPU benefits from revisions to the shader core architecture. Consumers looking to purchase the new hardware will find the M6 powering the latest Mac mini configurations. Apple has slated the device release for Tuesday, September 22, with entry-level pricing starting at $899.
