Apple M6 Processor Brings 2nm Technology and New Core Hierarchy
Leading the generational transition is the M6 chip, which serves as Apple’s first processor built on a cutting-edge 2-nanometer lithography process, according to PCMag. This node advancement packs greater transistor density into a smaller footprint, delivering substantial performance-per-watt efficiency gains compared with previous designs. The 2nm process technology steps beyond the 3-nanometer class label that Apple applied to all M5-series chips, which served as an umbrella designation for several 3nm nodes and variants.
The M6 introduces a newly structured 12-core CPU complex. As PCMag has detailed, the layout incorporates two super cores operating at high frequency for maximum single-threaded power, four performance cores dedicated to heavy multithreaded workloads, and six efficiency cores running background tasks. Apple reclassified its most recent high-performance cores as super cores last spring, establishing a three-tier core hierarchy that also appears in the M5 Ultra.

The device is currently available for pre-order ahead of its September 22 global launch. Out of the box, the Mac Mini M6 comes with 16GB of memory, with upgrade options available for 24GB or 32GB. The base M6 provides up to 32GB of memory at 170GBps of memory bandwidth.
Apple M5 Ultra Maximizes Performance With Quad-Die Architecture
While the M6 introduces 2nm technology, Apple is scaling its M5 architecture to extreme levels with the M5 Ultra, which is hailed as the company’s most powerful chip to date. According to Trusted Reviews and PCMag, Apple upgraded its proprietary UltraFusion interconnect technology to bridge two dual-die M5 Max chips, forming its first quad-die system-on-a-chip. Working through connections with ultra-low latency and delivering an inter-die bandwidth exceeding 4.4 terabytes per second, the four separate dies operate as a single unified processor.
This quad-die design allows the M5 Ultra to scale up to a 36-core CPU—consisting of 12 super cores and 24 performance cores—alongside an 80-core GPU, as reported by Trusted Reviews. Apple integrated dedicated Neural Accelerators into every GPU core across both the M5 and M6 families, placing hardware-accelerated matrix multiplication directly inside the graphics pipeline. The M5 Ultra GPU includes a latest-generation shader core featuring second-generation Dynamic Caching, hardware-accelerated mesh shading, and third-generation ray tracing, delivering up to 40% faster graphics performance than the M3 Ultra.

The system comes with 96GB of memory as standard and can be upgraded to 256GB immediately, while a 512GB option is scheduled to launch in late October. Powered by a high-bandwidth unified memory architecture, the M5 Ultra supports up to 512GB of total memory with 1.2 terabytes per second of memory bandwidth, representing a 50% increase over the M3 Ultra.
Neural Engine Upgrades and On-Device AI Capabilities
