Apple has released iOS 27.0.1, the first maintenance update for iOS 27, addressing a freezing and restarting bug on iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models.
Fixing the iPhone 18 Pro Face ID Restart Glitch
The primary target of the iOS 27.0.1 update is an intermittent problem that causes the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max to freeze or restart without warning. According to reporting from 9to5Mac, the flaw triggers when Face ID fails to authenticate during app sign-ins or when unlocking secured features like the Passwords app and private Safari tabs, particularly if users tap the Try Face ID Again
button.
Hardware placement differences likely account for why only the newest Pro models experience this behavior. While previous generations housed the Face ID camera within the Dynamic Island, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max position the sensor under the display to the left of the Dynamic Island, where a small white line briefly appears during authentication.
Additional Bug Fixes Across Apple Operating Systems
Beyond the flagship iPhone models, the software rollout includes targeted fixes for specific photo and interface errors. Apple confirmed that the update resolves an issue where color artifacts appeared on a small number of iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max photos captured at 2x zoom under particular lighting conditions at f/1.48.
A separate glitch affecting the Notification Center and Control Center has also been patched for all devices running iOS 27. Previously, opening both overlay menus at the same time could render the device screen completely unresponsive.
Simultaneous Updates for iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro
While the company did not specify exact patch notes for these platforms, the releases provide general bug fixes for hardware ranging from the iPhone 11 and later, through the fourth-generation iPad Pro 12.9-inch, second-generation iPad Pro 11-inch, fourth-generation iPad Air, ninth-generation iPad, and sixth-generation iPad mini.
The operating system updates follow last week’s rollout of watchOS 27.0.1, which addressed random restarts on Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 models linked to Neural Engine timeouts. Users can install iOS 27.0.1 by going to Settings, selecting General, and tapping Software Update.
