Apple Satellite Messaging: Expanding Coverage & Why I’m Investing
Apple’s satellite messaging service, initially a key feature of the iPhone 14 for emergency SOS outside cellular coverage, has expanded to include roadside assistance and messaging with family and friends.
Despite initial indications of a two-year free period, Apple has repeatedly extended free coverage. Hear’s a breakdown of the current free periods:
| Device | Free coverage Period |
|---|---|
| iPhone 14/15 | September 2022 – September 2026 |
| iPhone 16/16e | February 2027 - September 2028 |
| iPhone 17/17 Pro | September 2027 - September 2028 |
| iPhone Air | Up to September 2027 – September 2028 |
| Apple Watch Ultra 3 | September 2027 – September 2028 |
There was concern that charging for the service could lead to negative consequences,as highlighted by the potential scenario of hikers being unable to access emergency help due to an expired subscription.
Two potential solutions were proposed:
- Continued Free Service: Apple absorbing the cost as a PR and marketing expense.
- Tiered Subscriptions: Offering paid tiers (similar to Garmin) to subsidize a free emergency tier. A base, free SOS service could be maintained while offering enhanced features through paid subscriptions or inclusion in Apple One.
The author believes the base emergency SOS service will likely remain free indefinitely, and Apple was initially assessing the costs involved before implementing a tiered system.
