Published December 25, 2025, at 20:41 CET. This story recounts an unusual December 2010 event and reflects on a memorable evening at the Apple Store in Paris.
When Paris Grounded to a Halt
On december 8, 2010, the Paris region experienced a significant snowfall - approximately 10 to 15 centimeters – that, while modest by Alpine standards, effectively paralyzed the city. The snowfall disrupted public transportation and road networks throughout the Île-de-France region, according to reports from Le Monde.
Our Apple Store was located within a large shopping center, but one poorly served by public transport. The center relied primarily on bus routes, which became unusable due to the snow and ice. Many Parisian drivers, unaccustomed to winter conditions, found themselves stranded in the parking lot, as reported by RFI.
Stranded with the Castaways
As the day progressed, it became clear that employees would struggle to get home. Those who drove faced a parking lot gridlock, while those relying on public transport realized buses weren’t running. Only one colleague, a seasoned motorcyclist with appropriate equipment, successfully navigated the conditions. Around us, other stores began to close.
Management considered closing the Apple Store as well, but an option emerged: follow the lead of businesses like Starbucks and remain open to accommodate those stranded by the storm. Many customers were trapped in the shopping center, with no immediate way to return home.
An Unexpected Christmas Eve
The evening unfolded in an unusual manner. The Apple Store became a temporary refuge for shoppers and employees alike. The atmosphere was surprisingly convivial, a shared experience of being snowbound. This event, occurring just days before Christmas, created a unique and memorable atmosphere.
This experience foreshadowed two unusual encounters I would have at the Genius Bar in the days following the storm. These stories, involving a frantic search for lost data and a surprisingly calm repair of a snow-damaged device, will be shared in a future post. But for now, this December 8th remains etched in my memory as the warmest evening of my career – not as of the temperature, but because of the unexpected camaraderie forged in the face of a Parisian snowstorm.
