Apple’s Next Studio Display Expected in Early 2026 with Unusual 90Hz Refresh Rate

Apple is planning to release a new version of the Studio Display in the first half of 2026, but the upgrade may not be what some users expect. Instead of adopting the 120Hz ProMotion displays found in other Apple products, the new monitor is currently expected to feature a 90Hz refresh rate, according to recent reports.

The current Studio Display operates at a 60Hz refresh rate. A higher refresh rate generally results in smoother visuals, particularly noticeable during video playback and scrolling. However, 90Hz is an unusual specification for Apple, which typically utilizes 60Hz or 120Hz refresh rates across its device lineup.

The rumor of a 90Hz display originated in November 2024, when an anonymous listener to the Relay FM “Upgrade” podcast claimed Apple was developing the technology for use in future iPad Air, iMac, and Studio Display models. This claim has now been supported by a tipster who shared information with MacRumors, citing alleged details from an internal build of iOS 26.

According to the MacRumors tipster, code strings and display controller references within the iOS 26 build suggest the 90Hz refresh rate is likely for the next Studio Display. The reasoning behind this decision may be related to bandwidth considerations. While Thunderbolt 5 is capable of supporting 5K resolution at 120Hz without compression, Apple may want to reserve bandwidth for connecting other devices and peripherals to the monitor.

Beyond the refresh rate, the new Studio Display is also rumored to include several other upgrades. These potential improvements include support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) content, likely utilizing a mini-LED backlight for increased brightness, and a new Apple A19 chip – or potentially an A19 Pro chip – replacing the A13 chip found in the current model. The A19 chip could enhance the performance of features like the webcam and speaker system.

An unreleased Apple monitor with the model number A3350 surfaced in a Chinese regulatory database last month, and is believed to be the upcoming Studio Display 2.

Apple’s plans are subject to change. The information regarding the 90Hz refresh rate is based on an internal iOS 26 build from early 2025, and the company’s specifications may have evolved since then. However, current indications suggest Apple is prioritizing a balance between display performance and connectivity options with the next generation Studio Display.
