Apple has announced the permanent closure of three retail stores in the United States, scheduled for June 2026. The closures include locations in Connecticut, California, and Maryland, with the decision impacting the first U.S. Retail store to have unionized employees.
The affected locations are Apple Trumbull in Trumbull, Connecticut; Apple North County in Escondido, California; and Apple Towson Town Center in Towson, Maryland. According to a statement provided to MacRumors, Apple attributed the closures to declining conditions and the departure of other retailers at the shopping malls where these stores are situated.
Mall Conditions and Store Closures
Apple indicated that it evaluates existing locations to ensure it can meet customer needs effectively. The company cited specific struggles at the malls housing the three stores. For example, the owner of Trumbull Mall defaulted on a loan exceeding $150 million and the property is currently for sale.
At the Towson Town Center, several major retailers announced their departure earlier in 2026, including Tommy Bahama, Banana Republic, and Wockenfuss Candies. The Shops at North County, where the Escondido store is located, was sold a few years ago amid similar declining conditions.
Impact on Employees and Union Conflict
The closure of the Towson Town Center location is particularly significant as it became the first Apple Store in the U.S. To unionize in June 2022. The workers there are part of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, and the location was the first where Apple and unionized workers reached a contract agreement in 2024.
Apple stated that employees at the Trumbull and North County locations will continue their roles at nearby Apple Retail stores. However, employees at the Towson location will be eligible to apply for open roles at Apple in accordance with their collective bargaining agreement.
International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers
Appleās claim that the collective bargaining agreement prevents relocation is simply false and raises serious concerns that this closure is a cynical attempt to bust the union
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers expressed outrage over the decision, stating they are exploring legal options and working with allies and elected officials to hold the company accountable.
Operational Transition
The stores are scheduled to close permanently in June 2026. As of April 9, 2026, the stores were listed as temporarily closed today
on Apple’s website, with schedules indicating they would reopen the following day before the final June closure.
Apple noted that it will continue to serve customers in these regions through nearby stores, the Apple Store app, Apple.com, and through Apple Authorized Resellers and Service Providers.
