Apple TV Greenlights Ascension Psychological Horror Series from Alfonso Cuarón

Apple TV has greenlit Ascension, a psychological horror series developed by filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón and Anonymous Content. The project adapts the 2012 novel Last Days by author Adam Nevill and stars Caitríona Balfe as the lead character, Rose.

The series follows Rose, a documentalist and recently divorced mother who investigates the Church of Ascension, a mysterious 20th-century sect. According to reports from dodmagazine.es and larazon.es, the narrative focuses on Rose’s discovery of a dangerous secret hidden beneath the group’s spiritual teachings.

Production Leadership and Creative Team

Alfonso Cuarón is co-writing the series alongside his brother, Carlos Cuarón, as well as Christian White and Natalie Erika James. All four individuals will serve as executive producers, according to larazon.es.

Cuarón has been developing this adaptation for nearly a decade. Both dodmagazine.es and larazon.es note that the project was previously in development in 2017, at which time actor Casey Affleck was linked to the lead role, though that version did not materialize.

Cuarón’s Partnership with Apple TV

Ascension is the second series Cuarón has developed for Apple TV. He previously worked with the platform on the 2024 miniseries Disclaimer, which featured Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline, according to larazon.es.
