Updated June 4, 2025
Apple TV+ has entered the sports comedy arena wiht “Stick,” a new series starring Owen Wilson and Peter Dager. Wilson plays Pryce Cahill, a former golf superstar mentoring a young prodigy, portrayed by Dager, after a career setback.
Showrunner Jason Keller drew inspiration for Wilson’s character from his father’s experiences as a professional baseball player. Keller told ADWEEK he wondered about the long-term impact of athletic greatness.
The series arrives as golf experiences a surge in popularity. Keller noted the sport’s increasing diversity, with more women and younger individuals participating. The National Golf foundation estimates golf’s reach at 138 million people, a 45% increase as 2016.
Leagues like TGL are attracting a wider audience to golf in unconventional settings. TMRW Sports research indicates that while women and people of color are underrepresented on traditional courses, they constitute notable portions of golfers at “off-course” facilities.

To ensure authenticity, ”Stick” incorporates real golf elements. Professional golfers Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, Max Homa, and Wyndham Clark make appearances, along with broadcasters Jim Nantz and Trevor Immelman, and golf enthusiast Dan rapaport.
Golf consultants were hired to train wilson and other actors. Keller emphasized the importance of accurately portraying the sport for enthusiasts.
Guymon Casady, executive producer at Entertainment360, highlighted the show’s accessibility. He said the story is told from the perspective of outsiders, reflecting golf’s increasing democratization.
The show features brands like DraftKings, Five9, Burns & Wilcox, and ADP on characters’ apparel and equipment.
Ben Silverman,co-CEO of Propagate and an executive producer, anticipates increased advertiser interest. He believes the show’s broad appeal will attract both sports and non-sports fans.
“in the golf world, there are so many advertisers who are going to watch this show and raise their hand to try and figure out how they can be involved in the next season because it’s four quadrant,” Silverman said.
Silverman also noted the growing influence of golf on social media, particularly the #golftok hashtag on TikTok. He believes the show’s timing aligns perfectly with the sport’s rising popularity and the emergence of golf influencers.
