Apple Uses Radio Amid Music Streaming Competition
Apple Expands Radio Reach via TuneIn Partnership
Apple is strategically broadening the accessibility of its curated radio stations, moving beyond its own ecosystem to tap into a wider audience. This expansion, announced on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, marks the first time Apple’s radio content will be available outside of its native apps.
Reaching 75 million New Listeners
The initiative is powered by a collaboration with TuneIn, a leading digital radio platform. As of Wednesday, August 21, 2024, Apple’s six radio stations became accessible to TuneIn’s 75 million monthly active users. This partnership allows Apple to reach listeners through a diverse range of connected devices, including smart speakers and in-car entertainment systems.
Responding to a Competitive Landscape
Apple’s move comes amid intensifying competition within the music streaming industry. Rivals like Spotify are actively diversifying their offerings with features such as video podcasts and voice messaging, seeking to enhance user engagement and attract new subscribers. This expansion into broader radio distribution can be seen as Apple’s response to these evolving market dynamics.
Recent data indicates a shift in the US digital music subscription market. Apple’s market share decreased from 30% in 2020 to 25% by the end of 2023, while Spotify simultaneously increased its share. The TuneIn partnership is highly likely intended to counter this trend and bolster Apple Music‘s presence.
According to Richard Stern, CEO of TuneIn, discussions regarding a potential collaboration began in late 2023. Neither Apple nor TuneIn have publicly commented on the specifics of the agreement as of August 27,2024.
