Apple Vision Pro: Unveiling a 16-Year-Old Patent and Its Journey to Reality
In 2008, Apple filed a patent for a device called ‘eyePod.’ Recently, this patent resurfaced, revealing that the design closely resembles the $3,499 Apple Vision Pro headset. This suggests that Apple has been developing this technology for over 15 years. Unfortunately, reports indicate that production of the headset will stop by the end of 2024.
At the time of the patent filing, the display technology necessary for the Vision Pro did not exist. Even now, Apple faces challenges with sales. Dan Moren from Macworld reported on the patent, emphasizing that many of Apple’s patents never reach the market. Despite these hurdles, Apple managed to launch the AR headset, albeit with a high price tag.
The patent describes a wearable display that creates a virtual environment using intelligent sensors. These sensors track head and eye movements, allowing the device to adjust visuals, enhancing the immersive experience.
The company plans to release a more affordable version of the Vision Pro, but that has been delayed until after 2027. A new model with the M5 chipset is expected in 2025, which may include additional features like Apple Intelligence support. Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo noted that the delay in the lower-cost version is due to a lack of successful use cases that consumers can relate to, not just pricing issues. Increased app support could drive interest in this technology.
