the upcoming watchOS 26 will feature Workout Buddy, a new tool leveraging Apple Intelligence to provide personalized, real-time motivation during workouts. This feature aims to enhance the Apple Watch’s role in fitness tracking and encouragement, moving beyond generic feedback.
Workout Buddy analyzes individual fitness data, including heart rate patterns, weekly distances, and personal achievements. It then uses this data to generate dynamic, spoken insights during training sessions. The system employs a text-to-speech model trained on Apple Fitness+ trainer voices, creating a more engaging and human-like experience.
The new feature supports various workout types, such as running, walking, cycling, HIIT, and strength training. It requires Bluetooth workout headphones and a nearby iPhone with Apple Intelligence capabilities.
Along with Workout Buddy, watchOS 26 brings a Liquid Glass design, adding depth and real-time reflections to Smart Stack widgets, the Control Center, and notifications. The Smart Stack now offers contextual suggestions based on user routines and locations, such as Pilates reminders.
A new wrist flick gesture allows users to dismiss notifications or calls with a simple upward flick, enhancing one-handed usability alongside the existing Double Tap gesture. Apple is also introducing Live Translation in Messages, enabling automatic translation of incoming and outgoing texts directly on the wrist.
The Workout app receives a redesign with customizable corners and automatic music suggestions tailored to workout types and user preferences. Other enhancements include a Notes app, automatic volume adjustment for notifications, and improved accessibility features like Live Listen and Live Captions.
