Most foldable smartphones undergo twice as much mechanical wear as traditional devices, which often leads to significant physical degradation over time. To combat this, Apple built the Duo hinge using AI algorithms and advanced manufacturing techniques, according to statements made by Johny Srouji, the company’s chief hardware officer, during the Surprise and Shine event. Additionally, a confocal laser progressively scans the topology of every single unit, and systems 3D print up to 25 micro layers of a custom photopolymer to eliminate residual waviness.

Patents and Structural Enhancements for Flexible Screens

While competitors like Samsung and Huawei have established a strong presence in the foldable category, Apple has systematically built a foundation of specialized patents with the US Patent and Trademark Office to refine its hardware mechanics. Documentation on the USPTO website outlines a clever hinge system utilizing rotational synchronization gears to manage unfolding sequences accurately, alongside a counterbalance system of springs, pads, and rollers. To further safeguard the device against everyday damage, the patent documents describe friction clutch mechanisms with interlocked fingers and crescent-shaped slots that prevent over-rotations. The design also incorporates curved surfaces on hinge links to make rotation smoother and reduce long-term structural wear.

Display Durability and Finish Customization

Beyond the structural mechanics of the hinge, the Duo incorporates specialized external finishes to optimize usability and reduce surface wear. According to hardware disclosures shared by Srouji, Apple equipped the foldable phone with a custom nano-texture finish that significantly reduces glare and reflections. The device also features a multi-layer lamination strategy designed to increase overall durability. Earlier patent filings identified by Tech Times have also pointed toward broader explorations in screen resilience, including concepts for flexible displays utilizing self-healing properties activated via light, heat, or electrical currents. Of course, it remains to be seen whether those protections will be enough to keep the Duo in peak physical condition in the long run. TechCrunch
