Affordable Housing Developments Progress in Washington, D.C.
MHP, a nonprofit developer, is making strides in affordable housing within District 8 of Washington, D.C., with ongoing projects at Unity Place and Crescent Park Village.
Unity Place Renovations Nearing Completion
Unity Place, comprising nearly 400 apartments, is undergoing notable renovations, with approximately 70% of the construction now complete. A new community center, featuring a playground, is under construction to enhance facilities for residents.
Crescent Park Village Focuses on Long-Term Resident Needs
At Crescent Park Village, a garden-style community of 110 apartments, MHP is prioritizing renovations for units occupied for over a decade. Consultants have been engaged to oversee the preliminary stages of an energy and water renovation project, backed by $2.3 million from the National Housing trust. The initiative aims to improve sustainability and efficiency for long-term residents.
Parkview Towers Secures Funding for Exterior Renovations
After a seven-year fundraising campaign,MHP has secured nearly $14.7 million to finance essential exterior wall renovations at Parkview Towers. The project, requiring collaboration across multiple teams, is set to improve the living conditions for residents and the surrounding Tacoma Park community.
Empowering Families Through Education and Community Programs
FLOW Students Explore the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum
Future World Leaders (FLOW) students recently visited the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The students explored exhibits featuring aircraft, spacecraft, missiles, and rockets, including highlights such as the 1903 wright Brothers’ Flyer and the apollo 11 command module Columbia.
“Fun & Learning” Program Teaches Young chefs about Nutrition
Every wednesday, preschoolers in Tacoma Park’s “Fun & Learning” program participate in a “Little Chef” activity, learning about nutrition and how to prepare simple dishes. The program teaches children about the nutrients in food and how they affect the body, allowing them to experience food preparation using plastic knives.
Strengthening Neighborhood Relations Through Community Engagement
Senior Brunch Supports Local Silver Spring Restaurant
More than 30 senior residents from The Bonifant at Silver Spring enjoyed a special Thai brunch catered by Kook Kai, a family-run restaurant in downtown Silver Spring. Hosted by MHP Community Engagement Specialist Brownette Suku,the event aimed to raise awareness of the impact of Purple line Light Rail construction on local businesses and provide opportunities for seniors to explore local dining options. Residents were pleased to discover that one of the restaurant’s founders was a fellow resident of The bonifant.
MHP’s Explore Bonivant program supports local businesses affected by the Purple Line construction, encouraging community members to visit Bonifant Street and discover new dining locations.
World Water Day Celebrated in Montgomery County
The Wheaton Community Center in Montgomery County hosted its first World Water Day party,featuring a pinata created by local women from the Wheaton community. The event supported the United Nations’ World Water Day mission to raise awareness about the 2.2 billion people worldwide without access to safe freshwater.
The event also provided an opportunity to share information about local efforts to protect rivers, streams, and drinking water sources in Montgomery County.
Long Beach to Host May 5th Festival
Long Beach will host a May 5th Festival, featuring food, wine, music, dances, and pinatas. More information is available here.
