Chilean Justice Delivers Landmark Sentences Against Tren de Aragua Cell

Iquique, Chile – In a significant victory for ‍law⁤ enforcement and a stark ‌warning to organized ​crime, a ​Chilean court on monday ‌handed down perpetual ‌prison sentences to leaders⁤ of⁣ a⁤ notorious Tren de Aragua cell operating within the country.The landmark ruling, ‍following⁤ an extensive three-month⁢ trial, ⁢saw the leader, Carlos Leonardo González⁣ Vaca, known as “Estrella,” sentenced to life imprisonment for a string of heinous crimes, including kidnapping ​with homicide, migrant trafficking, and‍ human trafficking for ​sexual exploitation.

The Iquique‌ CourtS unanimous verdict, based on‌ over 1,000‍ pieces ‍of documentary‌ evidence,⁢ testimony from 224 witnesses, and the expertise of 38 specialists, unequivocally established González Vaca’s leadership of a⁣ “criminal‌ institution dedicated‌ to ​committing serious crimes” ⁢in the northern Tarapacá region between 2021 and 2022. ‌This organization,⁣ identified ⁤as a cell of the Venezuelan gang ⁢Tren de Aragua, was ​found to have exerted control over⁢ specific geographical areas.

“Estrella”‍ and “Satan” Receive Life ⁢Sentences

“Estrella” was found guilty of consummated ⁣kidnapping with mutilation and kidnapping with homicide, ​offenses committed between March and April 2022. His ⁣total sentence⁤ amounts ⁢to 45⁣ years in jail for ⁣these and other charges, including‍ illegal⁢ association ​as a leader, ‍trafficking of persons,⁣ and women⁣ trafficking. Judicial documents‍ revealed that ‌González Vaca directed the faction’s activities nationwide, receiving reports on ‍crimes committed⁢ by the​ organization.

Adding to the severity of the⁣ ruling, Hernán Landaeta garlotti,​ alias ​”Satan,” another key member of the⁢ Tren de⁢ Aragua cell,⁣ also received a perpetual prison sentence for kidnapping with homicide. The court‍ described Landaeta Garlotti as acting as a “hitman” ‍for the gang, ‍involved in intimidation​ and coercion of victims.⁢ He was further sentenced to ⁣47 years for other violent crimes.

Broader‌ Convictions Underscore Gang’s ⁤Reach

Beyond the top leaders,⁢ the Tarapacá Prosecutor’s Office ​secured‌ perpetual prison⁣ sentences for ⁤three other defendants. Additionally, two women ‍investigated in the case received sentences exceeding 20 years in prison, highlighting the comprehensive nature‌ of‌ the prosecution.

Tarapacá Prosecutor Trinidad Steinert expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “In accordance with‌ the sentence pronounced​ today, these convictions are ‌exemplary. It is indeed ⁢a sentence that ‍shows ⁢that the state of Chile⁢ is the one ​who has control.” ⁢The ‌convictions are⁣ seen as a powerful presentation of‌ chile’s commitment to combating ⁤transnational organized crime and ensuring⁣ justice for victims.the Tren de Aragua, a criminal syndicate originating in Venezuela, has ‍been classified as a “Foreign terrorist ‍organization” by ​the U.S. government, underscoring the gravity of the threat it poses across the region. This ruling ⁤in Chile marks a significant step in dismantling its‌ operations and bringing⁣ its members to justice.
