The political contest for the Aranmula Assembly seat in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections has intensified as a medical negligence victim and ASHA workers have joined a campaign against Health Minister Veena George.
On April 6, 2026, K.K. Harshina addressed a rally for the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate, Abin Varkey, in Pathanamthitta. Ms. Harshina shared her experience of carrying a surgical instrument in her abdomen for five years following a procedure at the Government Medical College, Kozhikode.
During the rally, Ms. Harshina criticized the Health Minister’s response to her situation, stating that the minister’s attitude caused her more pain than the physical injury and that the minister turned a blind eye to her plight despite previous promises.
ASHA Workers’ Protests and Allegations
Accompanying Ms. Harshina in the campaign were ASHA workers who have previously staged protests at the Secretariat. The campaign against Ms. George was led by protest committee leaders S. Mini and K.S. Bindu.

S. Mini criticized the Left Democratic Front (LDF) for spending on extravagant election campaigns while ASHA workers face financial distress. According to Ms. Mini, salaries for February and March have not yet been paid.
The workers also alleged that government incentives are constrained by legally questionable conditions, contributing to their ongoing financial instability.
Political Implications in Aranmula
The UDF has suggested that public sentiment regarding the state of the healthcare sector will impact the results in the Aranmula constituency. The UDF has claimed that Veena George may finish in third place due to voter dissatisfaction with the health department.
While some ASHA workers involved in the campaign against the minister have declined to state which candidate they will officially support, they have maintained their commitment to campaigning against the Health Minister.
K.K. Harshina
More than the physical pain, it was the Health Minister’s attitude that hurt me the most. She turned a blind eye to my plight. Despite promises, nothing was done to address my concerns
The battle for the Aranmula seat remains a high-stakes contest between the UDF and the LDF, with the health sector’s grievances becoming a central point of the local campaign narrative.
