The Disappearance and Recovery
the case of Archana Tiwari, a 22-year-old aspiring civil judge and advocate, captivated the nation for nearly two weeks. On Wednesday, August 13, 2025, the mystery concluded with her being traced in Lakhimpur Khiri, Uttar Pradesh, after disappearing mid-journey. initial contact with her family on Tuesday confirmed her safety, allowing authorities to pinpoint her location near the Nepal border.
The Root of the Problem: A Forced Engagement
The seemingly inexplicable disappearance stemmed from a deeply personal conflict. archana was facing immense pressure from her family to abandon her legal studies and enter into an arranged marriage with a Patwari – a local land record officer. She was reportedly instructed to prioritize wedding preparations over her career ambitions. This pressure, coupled with her strong will and legal acumen, led her to devise a carefully planned escape.
A Meticulous Plan Unfolds
on August 6, 2025, the day before her disappearance, Archana confided in Saransh Chopchen, a 26-year-old friend from her time studying in Indore, and Tejinder, a driver who frequently transported her. At a roadside eatery in Harda, the trio finalized the details of their operation.Archana believed a missing person report filed with the Government Railway Police (GRP) would likely be treated as a low-priority case, potentially dismissed as an accident – providing the cover she needed to start anew.
Tejinder accompanied Archana on the train to Itarsi, while Saransh drove separately to meet them. Their plan involved Tejinder discarding Archana’s clothes and mobile phone near Midghat in Madhya pradesh, creating a false trail suggesting she had fallen into the forest. To avoid detection, they deliberately chose routes bypassing toll plazas, knowing that FASTag and CCTV systems could track their movements.
The group traveled from Shujalpur to Burhanpur, then Hyderabad, Jodhpur, and Delhi, finally reaching Nepal on August 14, 2025, where Saransh departed, returning to Shujalpur. Throughout the journey, Archana strategically lay down in the car to remain unseen by surveillance cameras.
The Inquiry and Breakthrough
A dedicated team of 70 police personnel worked tirelessly for 12-13 days, reviewing over 500 CCTV camera feeds to unravel the mystery. Cyber experts analyzed Archana’s call detail records (CDR), identifying unusually long call durations to a specific number – belonging to Saransh Chopchen.
Upon questioning, Saransh confessed to the entire plot, leading police to contact Archana. She agreed to return, informing her family she was already en route back from the Nepal-India border.
A Tangential Connection: Ram Tomar
Investigations also revealed a prior connection to Ram Tomar, a man with whom Archana’s parents had arranged a marriage. Tomar, who knew Archana from her practice in Jabalpur, had hoped she would join his practice in Gwalior. However, Archana consistently rebuffed his advances, repeatedly declining travel arrangements he made for her. Police determined that Tomar played no role in her disappearance, confirming that Archana was the “mastermind” behind the elaborate scheme.
