Beloved Minnesota Teacher Leaves Lasting legacy
Wayzata, MN – Bette Hammel, a beloved teacher who touched the lives of countless students in the Wayzata school district, passed away peacefully on December 10th at the age of 89.
Hammel, known for her warm smile and infectious laugh, dedicated over three decades to nurturing young minds. Her passion for education extended beyond the classroom, as she actively participated in school events and fostered a sense of community among students and families.
“She was just so loved by everyone,” recalled her daughter,Susan Hammel. “Even years after I graduated, people would come up to me and tell me how much they loved my mom.”
Susan shared a heartwarming anecdote that exemplifies her mother’s enduring impact. “I remember once, when I was in college, I was telling a friend about my mom and how she always made everyone feel special. My friend said, ‘Oh, I bet it’s just becuase she was your mom.’ I told her, ‘No, mom, they love you, too.'”
Hammel’s legacy extends beyond her students. She was a devoted wife,mother,and grandmother,cherishing time with her family and creating lasting memories.
Hammel is survived by daughter Susan Hammel and son-in-law Dan Broberg, grandchildren Danny and Caleigh, and stepchildren Anne Hammel and Stephen Hammel, among other family members and friends. A visitation and funeral Mass will be held December 17th at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church in Wayzata.
