Arctic Wave Surfing: 100-Foot Waves Possible?
Beyond Nazaré: The Relentless Quest for the World’s Next Big Wave
Table of Contents
The sheer power and raw beauty of big wave surfing are undeniable. While Nazaré, Portugal, has become synonymous with the colossal waves that challenge the world’s most daring surfers, the pursuit of the ultimate ride extends far beyond its famous shores. For pioneers like Nic von Rupp and his “Mountains of the Sea” crew, the thrill lies in the relentless search for the next legendary break, a quest that takes them to the planet’s most remote and unforgiving corners.
the Grind Behind the Glory
Witnessing the “Mountains of the Sea” team in action, even during a relatively calm day at Nazaré, offers a glimpse into the immense physical and mental fortitude required. What might appear as playful antics to an outsider is, in reality, a testament to their dedication. These athletes spend hours battling frigid waters, enduring brutal wipeouts, and fighting off exhaustion, all in pursuit of that one perfect, monstrous wave. it’s a lifestyle that demands an unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
From Iceland’s Icy Embrace to Greenland’s Frozen Frontier
The spirit of exploration is deeply ingrained in the “Mountains of the Sea” ethos. Last October, Nic and his team embarked on their first official exploration to Iceland. For three weeks, they ventured off the beaten path, braving frigid temperatures and wild storms, hoping to uncover new big wave discoveries. While they found promising medium-sized surf, the elusive equivalent of Nazaré or Cortes Bank remained undiscovered – for now.
This year, the team is setting their sights on Greenland. Another three-week expedition awaits, this time in uncharted waters, intentionally placing themselves in the path of formidable storms. Their mission: to find any hidden potential that, with the right confluence of swell, direction, and wind, could captivate the world. Nic’s connection to these icy realms is personal; he was present during last year’s discovery of the RÁN wave, named after the Norse God of the Sea, by Freddie Meadows. This groundbreaking find considerably elevated the perception of what’s achievable in Scandinavia, setting a new benchmark for the region.
A boundless Pursuit of the Ultimate Wave
Coming from the legendary waves of Nazaré, Nic’s standards are exceptionally high. Yet, his ambition isn’t confined to Portuguese waters. He and his crew are driven by an innate daring, a deep-seated desire to explore the unknown. Their search for “Mountains of the Sea” knows no geographical boundaries, embodying the true spirit of big wave adventure.
