Islay, Scotland – Ardbeg, the renowned Islay single malt whisky distillery, is preparing to release a long-awaited cask strength version of its flagship Ten expression. The release, slated for , fulfills a two-decade-long request from the distillery’s dedicated fan base, known as the Ardbeg Committee.
The Ardbeg Ten Cask Strength will be bottled at 61.7% alcohol by volume, making it the highest proof release for the Committee to date. According to distillery representatives, the whisky has been matured in hand-selected barrels, resulting in an intensified expression of Ardbeg’s signature peaty character.
Ardbeg’s history stretches back over 200 years on the remote Scottish island of Islay, where it has become synonymous with heavily peated and smoky malt whiskies. The Ardbeg Ten is considered the distillery’s core offering and a favorite among Committee members.
A previous cask strength edition of the Ten was released in Japan in 2003, becoming highly sought after. Since then, demand for a similar bottling has remained consistently high within the Ardbeg Committee.
The creation of this new edition was spearheaded by Dr. Bill Lumsden and the distillery team, including the newly appointed co-chairpersons, Master Blender Gillian Macdonald and Distillery Manager Bryony McNiven. They selected both American bourbon barrels and experimental casks for maturation, aiming to capture the essence of Ardbeg while amplifying its intensity.
“A cask strength Ardbeg Ten honours the classic style of the distillery,” said Gillian Macdonald. “Dr. Bill and I selected casks that, matured at high proof, combine our typical flavours with a new intensity. I think Committee members will appreciate it, and those who get a bottle will discover notes of toffee and tar, fennel and sea spray, as well as sweet, chimney notes with peat moss, malt and smoked cinnamon. An unforgettable dram in honour of our Committee!”
Bryony McNiven added, “Ardbeg Ten Cask Strength has been so long desired. It’s fantastic to finally be able to share it with the Committee. What a dram – a perfect balance of wood smoke, citrus sweetness and salt.”
The Ardbeg Ten Cask Strength will be available exclusively to Ardbeg Committee members starting on , both online and in limited quantities at Ardbeg Embassies. A small number of bottles will also be available at the Ardbeg Distillery shop on Islay. Membership to the Ardbeg Committee is free and can be obtained through the distillery’s website.
The recommended retail price for the Ardbeg Ten Cask Strength is €85.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Pale Gold
Nose: Powerful, earthy, smoky and spicy, with a wonderful combination of toffee and tar, railway sleeper, coffee grounds and sea spray. Subtle notes of vanilla and lime assert themselves against the smoke. A few drops of water release classic Ardbeg notes such as fennel and campfire embers.
Palate: Full-bodied with distinct spice – on the tongue, the Ardbeg Ten Cask Strength surprises with intense sweetness reminiscent of smoked cinnamon and paprika powder. This is followed by a powerful wave of smoky notes – like soot, tar, wooden railway sleepers, peat moss and wood smoke. The smokiness is always in balance with gentle, malty biscuit aromas.
Finish: Menthol and almost cooling, with hints of eucalyptus and antiseptic lozenges.
The whisky is bottled at 61.7% ABV, non-chill filtered and without colour.
