Les Girondins de Bordeaux face a critical threat of liquidation and exclusion from national football competitions after the British investment fund Sparta Capital abandoned a proposed takeover bid, according to reports from L’Équipe.
The football club found itself without a buyer after Sparta Capital withdrew its offer. The prospective buyer failed to raise the 10 million euros required to finance the upcoming season, as reported by L’Équipe. Team leadership arrived alone on Wednesday morning at an appeal hearing before the DNCG.
Club president and owner Gérard Lopez attended alongside general director Arnaud Saint-André, attorneys Laurent Cotret and Matthieu Barandas, and Franck Michel, commissioner for the execution of the continuation plan. Representatives failed to provide the financial guarantees expected by regulators. According to Sud Ouest, the club needed to present between 9 and 10 million euros to settle arrears from the 2025-2026 season and secure the 2026-2027 budget.
DNCG Hearing and Regulatory Outlook
Following the failed takeover and subsequent financial shortfall, the DNCG appeals commission was expected to confirm the exclusion of Les Girondins de Bordeaux from national competitions, as reported by Sud Ouest. Club owner Gérard Lopez declined to inject additional funds into the team, having already contributed 71 million euros since 2021.
Despite the financial impasse, club leadership deployed an alternative strategy during the proceedings. Sud Ouest reported that Lopez launched a fresh call for tenders in search of a new buyer capable of financing the club and securing the continuation plan.
Legal Recourse and Next Steps
In the event of an unfavorable ruling from the DNCG, club management plans to refer the matter to the CNOSF. This move aims to secure additional time to finalize a potential cession.
Furthermore, club officials scheduled a meeting with the commercial court to address the mounting liabilities. With the failure of the Sparta Capital acquisition and the depletion of funding options, the immediate future of Les Girondins de Bordeaux remains severely compromised.
