Argentina Initiates Informal Talks with IMF for New Financial Program

Argentina Initiates Informal Talks with IMF for New Financial Program

November 22, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor News

Argentina Negotiates New IMF Program

Argentina’s Economy Minister, Luis Caputo, confirmed the government has begun informal talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to establish a new program. He noted the potential for fresh funding for the country.

Caputo mentioned, “We will likely have a closer relationship with the United States following Donald Trump’s victory. This opens possibilities for agreements that seemed difficult before.”

“We have started discussions with the IMF about a new program. We are determining the amount of funding and the manner in which it will be provided. It makes a difference if you receive USD 1 billion at the start or if USD 12 billion comes in over time,” Caputo explained during an interview with TN.

He emphasized that discussions will address the country’s monetary and exchange rate policies, as well as the amount and entry process for the funds.

The IMF also confirmed that Argentina is exploring the move to a new program. IMF spokesperson Julie Kozack stated, “The authorities are now looking at the option of a new agreement.” She acknowledged the successful foundation laid by Javier Milei’s economic program.

Kozack highlighted impressive results from Argentina’s stabilization program, including substantial reductions in inflation, a fiscal surplus, and improved reserve coverage. There are also early signs of economic activity and real wage recovery.

Kozack noted that the IMF’s technical staff is collaborating with Argentine officials and stands ready to assist the country in solidifying recent progress and addressing ongoing challenges.

Regarding the ongoing currency controls, she stated that to maintain stability and growth, it remains crucial to adopt a coherent set of fiscal, monetary, and exchange policies. The IMF team is closely involved in these discussions.

Argentine presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni assured that a new agreement would happen soon. He indicated that the path is clear for a swift resolution. However, any new program will need approval from Congress.

In the same interview, Caputo indicated that the end of the PAIS tax will result in a decrease in the credit card dollar exchange rate. He clarified that while it will be slightly higher than the official and financial dollar rates, it will still decline.

Caputo explained the current credit card dollar rate is artificially inflated for many consumers. When spending abroad, people can see how much they owe in dollars and choose to pay in pesos or dollars. Many opt to pay in dollars to avoid the inflated peso rate.
