The road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics is taking shape for Argentina’s volleyball teams, with both the men’s and women’s programs outlining their strategies for qualification. While the new season is barely underway, the focus is already firmly set on navigating the pathways to Olympic berths and, for the women’s team, securing a place in the prestigious Volleyball Nations League (VNL).
In December, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board and the FIVB Board of Administration officially approved the qualification systems for the LA28 Games, setting the stage for a competitive cycle. A total of 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams will compete in the Olympic volleyball tournaments.
Men’s Team Targets South American Championship
For the Argentine men’s team, the immediate priority is the 2026 South American Championship, held in Rio de Janeiro. This tournament offers a direct route to the Olympics, with the winning team securing one of the five quota places available through continental championships. The competition window is set for August 21 to September 27, 2026.
Argentina enters the championship with momentum, having won the previous edition in 2023 with a decisive 3-0 victory over Brazil in Recife. Head coach Horacio Dileo will be looking to replicate that success as he takes the reins following Marcelo Méndez’s tenure.
Beyond the South American Championship, the men’s team will also participate in the 2026 VNL. The FIVB recently announced the dates and venues for the VNL, though the specific match schedule for each team is still to be released. Argentina’s first week of competition will be in Brasilia from June 10-14, followed by a trip to Gliwice, Poland, from June 24-28. The regular phase will conclude from July 15-19 in Kansai, Japan. Should they qualify, the team will then travel to Ningbo, China, for the VNL Final 8.
Women’s Team Focused on VNL Qualification
For Las Panteras (The Panthers), the women’s national team, the primary objective is to earn promotion to the 2027 VNL. Currently ranked 17th in the world with 180.11 points, Argentina is aiming to climb the FIVB rankings and secure a spot among the elite teams competing in the annual tournament.
The team’s efforts will be heavily focused on the South American Cup, scheduled for July in Peru. This tournament, in its first edition in 2025, provides an opportunity for South American teams outside of the VNL to gain ranking points. The tournament allows teams to compete internationally and improve their standing, mirroring the impact of the European Golden League.
Argentina currently holds a significant advantage over its competitors vying for VNL qualification. The highest-ranked team outside of the VNL will earn promotion to the 2027 competition. Currently, Argentina leads Mexico (19th, 151.72 points), Slovenia (20th, 150.36 points), Kenya (21st, 148.42 points), and Colombia (22nd, 146.54 points).
Head coach Victoria Mayer will prioritize performance in the South American Cup to solidify their position and achieve VNL qualification. However, Brazil presents a formidable challenge in the South American Championship. Brazil has dominated the tournament for the past 15 years, winning every edition since 1995, and is currently ranked second in the world, trailing only Italy, the reigning Olympic and world champions.
Olympic Qualification Pathways
Beyond the continental championships, additional Olympic qualification opportunities will arise at the 2027 FIVB Volleyball World Championships. The top three teams in each gender, who have not already qualified through the continental championships, will secure Olympic quotas. The Women’s World Championship will be co-hosted by the USA and Canada, while the Men’s World Championship will be held in Poland.
The final three quota places for each gender will be determined based on the FIVB World Ranking following the preliminary phase of the VNL 2028, which concludes on June 11, 2028. The top three ranked teams in each gender that have not yet qualified will earn their place in Los Angeles.
Both Argentine teams face distinct paths to the Olympics. The men’s team is prioritizing a strong showing at the South American Championship to secure an early qualification, while the women’s team is focused on climbing the world rankings and earning promotion to the VNL. Both programs are committed to competing at their highest level and representing Argentina with pride on the international stage.
