Argentina’s National Wine: Celebrating Malbec and Its Diverse Regions

by Catherine Williams - Chief Editor

Argentina is the only wine-producing country that has declared wine as its national beverage. The Malbec grape is the most representative of Argentina, with the largest area dedicated to its cultivation. Although Torrontés is the only native grape, Malbec has shown excellent results across all regions.

The wine culture in Argentina is deeply rooted in social habits tied to family and friendship. Enjoyment of wine occurs alongside moderation and social control. On November 24, 2010, decree 1800 was signed, designating wine as the national beverage. This date is now celebrated as National Argentine Wine Day. In 2013, Law No. 26.870 was enacted to promote the traditions and cultural significance of wine production, elaboration, and consumption.
