Argentine Cyclist Disqualified: Gold Medal Controversy at Pan Am Games
Argentine cyclist Disqualified in Controversial Decision at Pan American Championships
The Pan American Cycling Championships in San juan,Argentina, were marred by controversy after cyclist Mateo Kalejman was disqualified just minutes before his race. The decision, based on a technicality regarding his bicycle’s seat position, has sparked outrage and accusations of unfair treatment, even drawing criticism from the newly crowned champion.Despite the setback for Kalejman, Argentina celebrated a gold medal win by Agostina Hein in the 400-meter freestyle swimming event.
disqualification Sparks Outcry
Mateo Kalejman’s disqualification stemmed from a measurement of his bicycle’s seat extension.According to reports, officials deemed the seat extended beyond the permitted limits. Kalejman vehemently disputes this, stating he left the starting area wiht measurements within the legal parameters and suggesting the seat may have shifted due to a bump or terrain irregularity.
“I went out with the bike extended.it is something that hurts me instead of benefiting,” Kalejman explained. “If I use the most inclined seat down I am falling out of the bicycle, my pedaling is worse, my pelvis moves more, I am less efficient, everything is worse.”
The cyclist further alleged that the decision was driven by bias, stating, “It is indeed totally unfair. It obviously has a lot of Colombia, because nobody does anything.” He accused the sports curator of acting arbitrarily, ignoring the possibility of external factors affecting the measurement. This isn’t the first time Kalejman has faced such issues; a similar incident occured at the Zurich 2024 Cycling world Cup, where he was barred from participating in the under-23 time trial due to a measurement showing his handlebars were two millimeters above the allowed limit. In that instance, prior checks had confirmed his bike’s compliance.
The controversy has even extended to other competitors, with the new champion, Florez, reportedly agreeing that the disqualification appeared unjust. Kalejman expressed his frustration, stating, “A huge impotence of not being able to do anything. I have prepared this competition three months, I trained purely and exclusively for this, all my careers have been focused on this and arriving and arriving and that five minutes before starting this, they destroy me.”
Agostina Hein Secures Gold and Pan Am Games Qualification
Amidst the disappointment surrounding Kalejman’s disqualification, Argentina found reason to celebrate with Agostina Hein’s stunning victory in the 400-meter freestyle. The 17-year-old swimmer clocked a time of 4m06s96, surpassing her own previous best of 4:13.41 set earlier in the competition during the series.
hein’s performance not only secured the gold medal but also established a new junior Pan American Record.Crucially, the win guarantees her participation in the Pan American Games in Lima 2027, marking a notable milestone in her burgeoning swimming career. This victory provides a radiant spot for the Argentine team following the contentious circumstances surrounding Kalejman’s race.
