Argentine Health Insurers Imputed for Alleged Price Fixing
Milei Management Accuses Major Health Insurers of price Fixing
Buenos Aires, Argentina – In a move that could shake up the Argentine healthcare industry, the Milei administration has accused several major health insurance companies and a former industry leader of engaging in anti-competitive practices.
The Comisión nacional de Defensa de la Competencia (CNDC), Argentina’s antitrust watchdog, formally charged Galeno, Hospital Británico, Hospital Alemán, Medifé, Swiss Medical, Omint, OSDE, and the Confederación Unión Argentina de Salud (UAS) with colluding to raise health insurance premiums. former Swiss Medical president and UAS head Claudio Belocopitt was also named in the charges.
The inquiry, launched in January, stems from a complaint alleging a coordinated price hike across these companies between December 2023 and April 2024.
“These companies have 20 business days to present their defense and provide evidence to refute the charges,” stated Manuel Adorni, spokesperson for President Javier Milei, during a press conference.
This isn’t the first time the Milei administration has taken action against the health insurance sector. In April, the Secretariat of Industry and Commerce issued an emergency order requiring these companies to roll back premium increases to December 2023 levels and prohibiting any further price hikes exceeding the inflation rate. The order also banned the sharing of sensitive commercial information, such as pricing, services, and costs, among these companies.
Adorni emphasized that if the CNDC confirms the cartel allegations, the government could impose fines of up to 30% of the companies’ annual revenue or double the illicit profits gained.
Government Uncovers Irregularities at National Hospital
In a separate advancement, Adorni revealed that the government has uncovered “serious irregularities” in the management of housing units provided by the National Hospital ”dr. baldomero Sommer,” a specialized leprosy treatment center.
According to Adorni, these state-owned properties, found in deplorable condition, were allegedly rented to patients. Upon the patients’ passing, the units were reportedly sold illegally without proper documentation.
He further alleged the exploitation of land surrounding the hospital and the sale of overpriced food to patients.
“The Association of Hospitalized Patients exploited the inefficiencies of the state to carry out these schemes,” Adorni stated. “This government finds corruption and instantly eliminates it.”
