Ariana Grande Rejects Hip-Hop Twist on Wicked’s ‘Popular’ Song
Ariana Grande, playing Glinda the Good in the upcoming film adaptation of Wicked, rejected a proposed change to the song “Popular.” Composer Stephen Schwartz wanted to update the song to a hip-hop style. Grande stated, “Absolutely not, don’t do it. I want to be Glinda, not Ariana Grande playing Glinda.”
In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Schwartz discussed the compromise that led to an altered vocal ending for the song, allowing Grande to showcase her operatic talent. He emphasized that this change would align with Glinda’s character.
Director Jon M. Chu praised Grande’s performance, saying she embodied the character from her first audition. He noted that by the first day of rehearsals, she had fully embraced her role.
Universal Pictures recently addressed rumors of salary disparities between Grande and her co-star, Cynthia Erivo, who portrays Elphaba. A spokesperson stated both actresses received equal pay and denied the speculation surrounding their salaries.
Overall, Grande’s commitment to authenticity in her role and the film’s dedication to its musical roots have been central themes in the film’s production discussions.
