ND3: Arlene, thank you for joining us today. You have been very open about your story, which started six years ago. What motivated you to go public about your childhood abuse?
Arlene Hayes: Thank you for having me. At the time, I felt an overwhelming need to share my story. I had spent years in silence, and I realized that speaking out could not only be a form of healing for me but also help others who had gone through similar experiences. I knew that visibility and vulnerability could foster understanding and empathy, and ultimately, create a safe space for survivors to begin their healing journeys.
ND3: Sharing such a personal story must have been incredibly challenging. Can you tell us about the support you received during that time?
Arlene Hayes: Absolutely. Returning to intensive counseling was crucial for me. It provided a safety net as I began to confront my past. I was fortunate to have a wonderful therapist who guided me through PTSD and helped me develop coping strategies. Additionally, the support from friends, family, and colleagues at Pamela Scott has been invaluable. They’ve stood by me every step of the way.
ND3: In 2019, you organized a charity event for the Rape Crisis Centre. What inspired that initiative, and how did it affect you personally?
Arlene Hayes: Organizing the charity event was, without a doubt, a turning point in my life. I wanted to give back to the community and support the organization that had helped many like me. The event brought together numerous survivors, raising awareness and funds for a cause close to my heart. It was liberating to break my silence and use my experience for something positive. Seeing the community come together was incredibly uplifting and reaffirmed my belief in collective healing.
ND3: What message do you hope to convey to other survivors through your story and your advocacy work?
Arlene Hayes: I want survivors to know that they are not alone and that healing is possible. It’s okay to speak out and share your story, and it’s also okay to seek help. My journey is ongoing, and while there are still challenges, I have found a renewed sense of purpose and strength. Together, we can change the narrative and create a culture of support and understanding.
ND3: How do you feel about where you are today, both personally and professionally?
Arlene Hayes: I genuinely feel like I am living my best life. Although the journey hasn’t been easy, I have embraced who I am and the lessons learned along the way. My role as store manager at Pamela Scott gives me a platform to inspire others, and I continue to be dedicated to supporting survivors. Knowing that I can make a positive impact in the lives of others is deeply fulfilling.
ND3: Thank you, Arlene, for sharing your inspiring journey with us. Is there any final thought you’d like to leave our readers with?
Arlene Hayes: I encourage everyone to be kind to themselves and to others. You never know what struggles someone is facing beneath the surface. Let’s continue to lift each other up, advocate for change, and support the voices of survivors everywhere.
