President Donald Trump has extended the ceasefire with Iran indefinitely while maintaining the U.S. Navy blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, citing what he described as a serious fracture within Iran’s government.

The decision follows the cancellation of a planned second round of peace talks led by Vice President JD Vance in Islamabad, Pakistan, which the White House confirmed had been put on hold. Vance had previously returned to Washington after more than 16 hours of negotiations with Iranian officials ended without an agreement.

Speaking after canceling Vance’s trip, Trump ordered the armed forces to continue the blockade and remain prepared in all other aspects, according to a statement reported by El Mundo. The blockade, which began after talks collapsed, is being enforced by U.S. Central Command against vessels of all nations attempting to enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz, while still allowing transit between non-Iranian ports.

Trump asserted that Iran remains intent on pursuing a nuclear weapon, stating during remarks outside Washington that Iranian officials had made this clear during the weekend negotiations. He reiterated his position that Iran would not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.

The U.S. Military announced that the blockade of Iranian ports would begin Monday at 10 a.m. EDT, applying impartially to all ships regardless of nationality. This action came after 21 hours of face-to-face talks between U.S. And Iranian representatives in Islamabad failed to produce a deal, leaving the status of the previous two-week ceasefire uncertain.

The conflict, described as having entered its seventh week, has resulted in thousands of casualties and significant disruption to global markets. Trump expressed indifference to whether Iranian officials would return to negotiations, stating he would be fine if they did not come back to the table.

In addition to the Iran developments, Trump publicly criticized Pope Leo XIV on social media, urging the first American pope to stop catering to what he described as the Radical Left, further escalating an ongoing feud between the White House and the Vatican.
