Possible Armed Man Prompts Sheriff’s Office Response in San Jose
The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a possible armed man Sunday morning in unincorporated San Jose. Deputies were dispatched to the 15000 block of Camden Avenue at approximately 10:45 a.m., according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities did not order a shelter in place during the response, but encouraged the public to avoid the area. As of Sunday afternoon, no further information had been released regarding the incident or the individual involved.
Recent Sheriff’s Office Activity Includes Fatal Shooting Following Traffic Stop
This incident follows a series of recent events involving Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies. Just last month, on October 27, 2025, deputies fatally shot a man armed with a knife after a two-hour standoff following a traffic stop on Fruitdale Avenue near College Drive in San Jose.
Sheriff Robert Jonsen detailed the events at a press conference, explaining that the initial traffic stop occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. The driver reportedly began acting “erratically,” prompting deputies to request backup. A Psychiatric Emergency Response Team, consisting of law enforcement and mental health clinicians, was deployed to attempt to de-escalate the situation.
After more than two hours of negotiation, the man exited the vehicle wielding a knife and charged toward the deputies. Two deputies, a 24-year veteran and another with nine years of service, discharged their firearms. Both deputies had undergone extensive training in crisis response, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The man was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Deputies had utilized less-lethal tools, including pepper balls, in an attempt to avoid using deadly force, the Sheriff’s Office stated.
The San Jose Police Department is leading the investigation into the shooting, and the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review of the incident.
Another Shooting Earlier in the Week
Prior to the Fruitdale Avenue incident, deputies were involved in another shooting on Monday evening, also in San Jose, where a man with a knife was shot and killed during a traffic stop. Neighbors reported witnessing the standoff, with deputies eventually breaking the car windows before the shooting occurred. The man was also taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.
Mark Lucas, a neighbor who witnessed the second shooting, recounted the events to ABC7 News. “He wouldn’t come out. Finally, the police, after a few hours, they broke the back windows,” Lucas said. “I thought they’re going to use like riot gas and maybe try to get him out of the car. Next thing I know, they’re yelling, he’s got a weapon, and there were three shots fired, and they pulled him out of the car, tried to do CPR.”
The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that several less-lethal tools were deployed before the use of deadly force.
These incidents highlight a period of increased activity for the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, involving potentially dangerous encounters and the use of force. Investigations are ongoing in both cases.
