Army Chaplain & Soldiers Honoured After Galway Barracks Stabbing

An Irish army chaplain who sustained multiple stab wounds during an attack at Renmore Barracks in Galway in has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, with merit. The honour recognises not only Father Paul Murphy’s resilience in the face of violence but also the swift and courageous response of three soldiers who intervened during the assault.

The attack occurred on , as Father Murphy approached the barracks entrance. He was repeatedly stabbed by a teenage assailant and sustained a number of stab wounds. Despite the severity of the attack, he made a full recovery and subsequently returned to duty. The attacker, who was 16 at the time of the incident, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was sentenced to ten years’ detention last year, with the final two years suspended.

Alongside Father Murphy, Private Ciara Shanahan, Corporal Daniel Padden, and Private Dylan Geraghty were recognised for their actions on the night of the attack. The awards were presented at a ceremony attended by Minister for Justice Helen McEntee and Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy, Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces.

Private Shanahan, who was on guard duty at the time, immediately alerted the Barrack Guard and attempted to deter the attack while unarmed. She was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal with merit for her quick thinking and bravery. Corporal Padden, the Guard Commander, and Private Geraghty responded rapidly, issuing verbal warnings and, warning shots. Private Geraghty then tackled the assailant, removing the immediate threat to Father Murphy, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, with honour. Corporal Padden, maintaining a defensive position prepared to escalate force if necessary, received a Distinguished Service Medal with distinction.

The incident highlights the potential for violence even within secure military installations and the critical role played by personnel in responding to such emergencies. The Defence Forces’ statement emphasized the exceptional bravery and professionalism demonstrated by the soldiers under extreme pressure. The swift actions of Private Shanahan, Corporal Padden, and Private Geraghty were instrumental in preventing any loss of life.

Father Murphy’s response following the attack has also drawn significant attention. At the sentencing hearing, he publicly forgave his attacker and expressed hope that the teenager would be able to make a positive contribution to society upon his release from prison. This act of forgiveness, widely reported in Irish media, has been lauded as a powerful example of compassion and reconciliation.

Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy, Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, stated, “I am immensely proud of these soldiers. Their conduct brings great pride to their unit, An Chéad Chathlán Coisithe, and to the Defence Forces as a whole and it reinforces the trust placed in us by the people we serve.”

Father Murphy expressed his gratitude for the award, but also emphasized his happiness that his colleagues were being acknowledged for their courage and bravery. The awards serve as a formal recognition of their selfless actions and dedication to duty.
