Alpine reserve driver Paul Aron is set to gain valuable Formula 1 experience, joining sauber for practice sessions at the upcoming British Grand Prix in Silverstone and the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest. Aron, an Estonian driver, will debut with the team during Friday’s practice at Silverstone.
Sauber, lacking a reserve driver this season, needed a rookie to fulfill regulations requiring two FP1 sessions. Aron’s involvement adds intrigue to Alpine’s driver situation, notably concerning Franco Colapinto’s performance.
Alpine replaced Jack Doohan with Colapinto at Imola, but the Argentine driver has yet to meet expectations after a prosperous run with Williams last year. Flavio Briatore, Alpine’s de facto team boss, suggested Colapinto needs to improve his performance to remain with the team for the entire season.
Sources indicate Alpine is considering another driver change if Colapinto doesn’t show important improvement.Aron’s practice appearances before the summer break could fuel speculation about a potential driver swap in August.
Valtteri Bottas, a Mercedes junior driver, is reportedly being considered for a similar role.Alpine is set to switch to Mercedes power in 2026,perhaps facilitating a deal. Aron finished third in formula 2 last year but has not been actively racing in 2025.
Aron will take over Nico Hülkenberg‘s car at Silverstone and Budapest before Hülkenberg resumes driving for the remainder of each weekend. Formula 1 rules mandate that two rookies participate in four FP1 sessions per season. Hülkenberg’s teammate, Gabriele Bortoleto, is a rookie and has already fulfilled two of those required days.
