From humble Beginnings to a Leading Agency
“Around the Sun” (Apkārt saules), a Liepaja-based institution dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities, marked its 25th anniversary on September 13, 2024.What began in 1999 with a single bus providing transportation services has evolved into a extensive agency offering a wide range of support services.
the organization’s initial focus on transportation addressed a critical need in Liepaja, enabling greater independence and access for people with disabilities. This foundational service quickly expanded to include social rehabilitation programs, occupational therapy, and assistance with daily living skills.
A History of Growth and Adaptation
Founded by Inta Šūmane, “Around the Sun” initially operated under the Liepaja City Council. in 2006, the organization transitioned to become an autonomous non-governmental organization (NGO), allowing for greater flexibility and responsiveness to the evolving needs of the community. This shift enabled “Around the Sun” to pursue funding opportunities and develop specialized programs tailored to individual client requirements.
Currently, the agency provides services to approximately 120 individuals with disabilities and employs a dedicated team of 45 professionals. Thes services are delivered both at the organization’s central location and within clients’ homes, ensuring accessibility and personalized care.
