The vaccination schedule involves an ‍initial series of two injections administered two weeks apart, followed by ‍a booster dose between four and six months later. Continued exposure necessitates revaccination every ‍two years. This preventative measure complements existing safety recommendations, such as⁢ wearing protective clothing like gloves and boots, properly covering wounds, ⁤and maintaining equipment.

Rising Cases Prompt Urgent Response

The decision to broaden⁣ vaccine access follows a significant increase⁣ in leptospirosis cases on Réunion Island. Since the beginning of 2025, coinciding with the impact of Cyclone Garance and subsequent heavy rainfall, 114 cases have been ⁢identified.⁢ Data from the Regional Health Agency (ARS) indicates that 66% of patients required hospitalization, with approximately one-third needing intensive care.

Residents seeking vaccination ⁢can access ⁣services through occupational health facilities for agricultural workers, or schedule appointments at vaccination centers within the University ⁣Hospital Centers (CHU) of ⁤Saint-Denis and Saint-Pierre. The campaign ⁤is fully⁣ funded by⁢ health insurance and the agricultural social mutual fund through the social action funds of the general Social Security Fund (CGSS).
