Chong Buck Tee, a Chinese brush painting teacher, emphasizes the power of focused attention. “When you learn Chinese painting, such as drawing horses, it can help stabilise our mood, as well as lower our stress and anxiety levels because we are so focused on our drawings,” he said. “In the long run, it improves our well-being.”

The practice isn’t simply about creating a beautiful image; it’s about the process itself. The act of carefully controlling the brush, mixing the ink, and observing the flow of the paint demands a level of concentration that effectively shuts out distracting thoughts, and worries.

Tan Lee Chin, a Chinese calligraphy teacher and former headmistress, highlights the particular suitability of the art form for seniors. “In order to practise the art, you need to stay calm,” Tan explained. “If you are frantic, there is no way you can practice calligraphy. So if you can spare an hour, empty your mind and focus wholeheartedly on calligraphy, it’s very beneficial to your health.”

Beyond the mental benefits, Tan also points to the physical engagement involved in calligraphy. “When we move our brush, we are using strength from our entire body and not just from our hand and wrist. The flow of the energy is from the whole body,” she said, describing a holistic connection between mind and body fostered by the practice.

The growing interest in calligraphy and brush painting aligns with a broader trend towards mindfulness and creative therapies. Research suggests that engaging in art activities can significantly reduce cortisol levels – a hormone associated with stress – by as much as 75%. This physiological response underscores the potential of these practices as a natural and accessible method for stress relief.

The principles behind the calming effects of calligraphy are echoed in other mindful creative pursuits. A 2025 study published in Frontiers in Psychology explored the association between calligraphy activities and flow experience, peace of mind, and self-focused attention among university students, finding a strong correlation between the practice and improved mental wellbeing. Similarly, watercolor painting is gaining recognition as a beginner-friendly mindfulness practice, offering similar benefits through its emphasis on presence and focused attention.
