Astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft during the Artemis mission have completed a historic lunar flyby, offering humanity its first direct human observation of the far side of the Moon in more than fifty years, according to reporting by Arena IT. The milestone mission provides crucial data on lunar geology and navigation, preparing the ground for future crewed landings near the lunar south pole.
Geological Differences Between Lunar Hemispheres
According to Arena IT, the far side of the Moon looks dramatically different from the familiar Earth-facing hemisphere. While the near side features vast plains of solidified lava known as lunar maria, the far side is heavily rugged, dominated by mountain ranges and deep craters. During the flyby, crew members observed Mare Orientale, a gigantic impact basin measuring approximately 900 kilometers in diameter. According to Arena IT, the structure displays concentric rings of ridges resembling ripples in a pond, viewed from an altitude of approximately 5,000–6,000 kilometers.
Gravitational Forces and Synchronous Rotation
Explaining the visual differences to President Trump during a communication session, Artemis II crew member Jeremy Hansen noted that Earth’s gravitational pull shaped the near side profoundly. Hansen stated the gravitational pull of the Earth has had a profound effect on the near side of the Moon, altering all those dark lunar maria, those dark patches that you see on the Moon from Earth,
as reported by Arena IT.
According to Arena IT, tidal forces from Earth slowed the Moon’s rotation over time until it achieved synchronous rotation, locking one hemisphere permanently toward our planet. Scientific data from China’s Chang’e 6 mission further supports the theory that a massive ancient impact created the stark geological asymmetry between the two halves.

Radio Silence Behind the Moon
The journey around the far side brought technical hurdles for the flight crew. According to Arena IT, the Orion capsule lost all radio contact with NASA’s control center for roughly 40 minutes as the Moon blocked all signals during the lunar occultation.
The crew emerged from radio silence at one of the furthest distances humans have ever traveled from Earth. Upon the restoration of communications, Arena IT reports that a crew member radioed back to mission control, It’s great to hear Earth again.
