Arthur Fils Returns: Toronto Update | ATP Tour
Fils Returns to Tour with Renewed Enthusiasm at National Bank Open
Arthur fils is back on the ATP Tour, and the young Frenchman is embracing the familiar sights and sounds of competition after a period away. The 21-year-old expressed his delight at reconnecting with friends and the tour surroundings at the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers in Toronto.
“it’s pretty nice. It’s been a long time [that] I didn’t see [my] friends on the Tour, so now I am happy to be back,” Fils told ATPTour.com. “Of course,it changed a lot since two months. I was in shape, I was playing pretty good. Now I’m coming back, still in shape, but not playing good. But it’s pretty nice to be back and I’m enjoying [it].”
The break, which followed the clay-court major, meant Fils was off the sidelines, a stark contrast to the constant proximity players usually experiance with their rivals. While he enjoyed his time away with friends and family in his hometown, the return to the tour circuit brings a special kind of camaraderie.
“When I’m not there, I have another life, of course. I have friends from my hometown, my family and everything,” Fils explained. “But when I step back into the Tour it’s always nice to see some familiar faces like Gael or Ben, or Foki. It’s nice to be back and to see these guys.”
Fils, who only resumed on-court training less than two weeks ago, acknowledges that regaining his peak form will be a process. The initial moments back on court were a mix of excitement and a touch of frustration, but the overall feeling is one of positive progression.
“When I stepped on the court, I was excited. After five minutes, I was already mad,” Fils said with a laugh. “But it’s nice to be back to playing. It’s been 10 days now that I’ve been playing. I feel that the level is going better and better day after day. So, I’m pretty happy.”
A Strong Season So Far,Looking to Build Momentum
Despite the recent layoff,Fils has enjoyed a strong season thus far, boasting a 21-10 record according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. His performances at the early hard-court Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami, where he reached the quarter-finals, highlight his potential on this surface. He’ll be aiming to recapture that consistency in Toronto. His second-round clash in Toronto is against former Top 10 player Pablo Carreño Busta, a challenging but welcome test as he continues his comeback.
Focusing on the Process, Not Just the Results
For Fils, the immediate focus isn’t solely on winning matches, but on the experience of competing again and enjoying the journey.
“Just competing again.Just to step on the court,” he shared. “People screaming my name and me trying to play my best tennis or at least just enjoy my time on the court.”
This mindset, coupled with his evident talent and renewed enthusiasm, suggests that Arthur Fils is a player to watch as the National Bank open unfolds.
