Actor Arturo Puig has spoken candidly about the enduring grief and the process of adaptation following the death of his longtime partner and fellow artist, Selva Alemán. Having shared a life and career with Alemán for over five decades, Puig has detailed the emotional challenges of navigating a daily existence without her presence.

In a series of interviews and public reflections, including a conversation with Catalina Dlugi on the program Once Diez, Puig described the mourning process as an emotional roller coaster. He noted that his experience is characterized by alternating between a good day and a bad day, where the void left by Alemán remains a persistent and silent presence in his life.

Triggers of Memory and Daily Life

Puig explained how mundane occurrences can trigger intense nostalgia. He recounted a specific instance where seeing images of Rome on television caused a return to sadness, as Rome was a place he and Alemán loved to visit whenever they traveled to Europe.

Triggers of Memory and Daily Life

This sense of loss extends to the physical spaces they once shared. Puig revealed that he has undergone a significant life transition by moving from a large house where the couple lived for approximately 30 years into a smaller apartment. He described the simultaneous process of managing a move and a bereavement as being sources of significant stress.

Impact on Professional Life

The emotional weight of the loss has also affected Puig’s professional engagements. During an appearance on La Noche de Mirtha in March 2025, the actor addressed the cancellation of his participation in a theatrical play that was intended to mark his return to the stage.

When questioned about the cancellation, Puig admitted that he had been unable to proceed, stating, The truth is that I haven’t been able to. He expressed the difficulty of accepting a future where he will no longer see his partner.

A Legacy of Art and Partnership

The bond between Puig and Alemán was both personal and professional. The two were inseparable partners for decades, and they previously collaborated on productions such as the play Long Day’s Journey into Night.

On September 3, 2025, marking one year since Alemán’s passing, Puig shared a tribute on social media. The post, which featured a collection of photos and videos highlighting Alemán’s career on stage, was originally shared by the National Secretary of Culture, Leonardo Cifelli.

I grew up in theaters and on top of stages. Between boxes and learning the plays by heart, because my mother took me to the theater. I love my characters, whatever they may be and I try to understand them. Art is a one-way street and it serves everyone. I believe it is a path in which one does not make mistakes.

Selva Alemán

Puig continues to describe Alemán as a woman of great intelligence and the great love of his life, maintaining that he will love her deeply.
