Boulter Begins Season with Victory in Auckland
British number four Katie Boulter launched her 2026 season with a decisive victory over Yuliia Starodubtseva of Ukraine at the ASB Classic in Auckland. Boulter won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, marking her first competitive match since October.
This match also represented Boulter’s debut under her new coach, Michael Joyce. She entered the WTA 250 tournament as a wildcard recipient and will next face top seed Elina Svitolina, also of Ukraine.
Australian Open Qualification Outlook
Boulter’s current ranking outside the world’s top 100 presents a challenge for direct entry into the Australian Open. Currently holding the position of third alternate, she will likely need to navigate the qualifying rounds at Melbourne Park to secure a place in the main draw, contingent on sufficient withdrawals from the field.
Kartal Advances to Second Round
Fellow British player Sonay Kartal also enjoyed success in Auckland, defeating Janice Tjen of Indonesia 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3. World number 68 Kartal, who previously reached the last 16 at Wimbledon in 2025,will now compete against Germany’s Ella Seidel in the second round.
