ASEAN Emphasizes Importance of Science, Technology, and Innovation Cooperation

The Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) emphasized the importance of science, technology, and innovation (STI) cooperation during the opening ceremony of the 22nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation, according to the ASEAN Main Portal. The event, held on June 26, 2026, brought together ministers and officials from ASEAN member states to discuss collaborative initiatives with regional and global partners.

In his remarks, the ASEAN Secretary-General highlighted the need for accelerated STI partnerships to address shared challenges such as climate change, digital transformation, and sustainable development. “Strengthening collaboration in science and technology is critical to fostering inclusive growth and resilience across the region,” he stated, citing the importance of knowledge-sharing and joint research projects.

China and ASEAN reaffirmed their commitment to expanding STI cooperation during the meeting, as reported by Vietnam+ (VietnamPlus). The two parties agreed to deepen collaboration in areas like artificial intelligence, green energy, and healthcare innovation. A joint statement from the meeting noted that “mutual trust and strategic alignment will drive future initiatives,” though specific funding or project details were not disclosed.

South Korea also announced plans to enhance its STI partnerships with ASEAN. The Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology (MSIT) of South Korea confirmed it would host a Korea-ASEAN science and technology joint committee meeting in Laos later in 2026. This follows a 2025 agreement to boost tech exchanges, with officials citing “mutual benefits in digital infrastructure and advanced manufacturing” as key priorities.

Japan and ASEAN further advanced their STI collaboration, according to Asia News Network reports. The two parties discussed expanding research partnerships in quantum computing and space technology. A Japanese government official noted that “ASEAN’s dynamic innovation ecosystem offers valuable opportunities for joint ventures,” while ASEAN representatives emphasized the need for “equitable technology transfer mechanisms.”

The meeting also addressed the role of STI in regional connectivity. Delegates from ASEAN member states and partner nations outlined plans to establish a regional innovation hub, aimed at supporting startups and SMEs in the tech sector. The initiative, proposed by Indonesia, would be funded through a combination of public and private investments, though no formal budget figures were released.

Regional experts noted the significance of these developments in the context of broader geopolitical shifts. “ASEAN’s focus on STI cooperation reflects a strategic effort to balance influence among major powers while advancing its own developmental goals,” said Dr. Nguyen Thi Huong, a research fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. “However, challenges such as funding disparities and intellectual property concerns will need careful management.”
