The Regional Complete Economic Partnership (RCEP) took center stage at the 5th High-Level Dialogue on Economic and Trade Cooperation, held recently. RCEP’s Progress and Potential
RCEP, comprising 15 Asia-Pacific nations – the ten ASEAN Member states plus Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea – represents the world’s largest free trade agreement, covering approximately 30% of the global population and GDP.Secretary-General Kao highlighted the notable progress made in implementing RCEP as its entry into force on January 1, 2022. he noted the increasing utilization of RCEP tariff concessions by businesses, signaling a growing integration of regional supply chains.
Focus on Digital Economy and SMEs
A key theme of the dialogue was the importance of leveraging the digital economy too drive further economic expansion. Secretary-General Kao underscored the need for enhanced cooperation in areas such as e-commerce, data flows, and digital trade facilitation. Recognizing that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of many RCEP economies, he stressed the importance of providing them with the necessary support to benefit from the agreement’s opportunities.
