Sydney Thunder have successfully signed Indian international cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, BBL|14. the announcement was made by Sydney Thunder General Manager, Trent Copeland, on Friday, October 4, 2025.
Copeland emphasized the meaning of securing Ashwin, stating, “It’s a really clear message to our fans and members and sponsors … that we are winning these moments.all eight clubs wanted this guy. Ashwin has chosen us, which is a really cool story.” He further highlighted Ashwin’s potential as an ambassador for the BBL, adding, “Ashwin will be a great advocate for how great our tournament is and the Thunder environment.”
The Thunder have a history of providing premium accomodation to star players. During Chris Gayle’s tenure with the franchise, he was housed in a luxurious penthouse. When questioned about whether Ashwin would receive similar treatment, Copeland, a former Test medium pacer, responded with humor, acknowledging budgetary constraints but assuring a positive experience for the Indian star.
“The Thunder have got history with that (with) Chris Gayle. I know when he was out here, he was staying in a lofty penthouse, but that was while I was playing in the tournament, not while I was the general manager and looking after the budget,” Copeland joked. “What we want to make sure is that he and every other overseas player has a hell of a time when they’re here. We’ll look after them, that’s for sure.”
