Ahn, 62, describes the production as a declaration of modern choreography, aiming to transcend fixed perceptions of Asia. “I wanted to remove the piles of things that were named so long ago,” she said. ”I was ready to open the door of Asia Futurism. I hope it will be a footprint that transcends the existing gaze that has consumed Asia with a fixed image and knocks on the new beginning.”
Micom Ferni’s Unique Style
Founded in 1988, Micom Ferni, the dance company behind “Eastern Future Express”, has cultivated a distinctive style blending Korean tradition and modernity. Their beliefs centers on the concept of “human dancing animals,” earning them recognition both domestically and internationally. Inspiration from Across Asia
Ahn Eun-mi immersed herself in the cultures of Manila, Bali, and Okinawa to inform the work. Rather than simply borrowing elements, she sought to understand the emotions inherent in these cultures, translating movements captured in these regions into choreography that explores the interplay between tradition and contemporary life.
The stage design, conceived by Ahn, incorporates numerous fabrics and patterns collected throughout asia. More than 800 colorful trays are used to represent the diverse topography of the continent, with patterns and textures symbolizing the unique traditions of each region.
“We have produced the most costumes and props in my dance life,” Ahn said. “The number has increased as I tried not to miss the history of Asian countries one by one, and I asked the artists who met while traveling to Asia to send a pattern of new traditions as well as conventional fabrics. I prepared.”
