Philippines: “Ghost Projects” Spark Mass Protests

On September 15, 2024, exactly 53 years after Ferdinand Marcos Sr. declared ⁤Martial Law, an estimated 100,000+ Filipinos ‍gathered in Manila’s Luneta Park to protest alleged corruption within the management of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. Agence France-Presse reported the demonstrations centered on billions of pesos allegedly diverted through fraudulent “ghost” flood control projects.

These projects, contracted but never⁤ constructed, have ignited public fury. Protesters marched down Epifanio⁢ de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), a historically important road symbolizing the ‍1986 People Power Revolution that ousted‍ the elder Marcos. The⁤ symbolism was not lost on participants.

“This theft of public funds is truly shameful,” Aly Villahermosa, a 23-year-old nursing student, told Agence France-presse. “If there’s a budget for ghost projects, then why‌ is there no ⁣budget for the health sector?”

Nepal: Protests Against Political Corruption and Governance

Nepal has experienced a surge in protests since late ⁣2024,⁢ driven by widespread dissatisfaction with political corruption and perceived failures in ‌governance. The Kathmandu Post reported that⁣ youth-led ⁢demonstrations have become ‌increasingly frequent in Kathmandu and other major ‍cities.

Key grievances include allegations of embezzlement of public funds, lack of transparency in government contracts, and a perceived lack of accountability among‌ political leaders. The protests have also been fueled⁤ by economic hardship and limited opportunities for young people.

While specific‍ incidents vary, a common thread is ‌the demand for systemic change and an end to⁣ impunity. Protesters are calling for independent⁤ investigations into corruption allegations and for reforms to strengthen democratic institutions.

Indonesia:⁢ Concerns over ‌Electoral Integrity and Political Dynasties

Indonesia, despite being⁤ a relatively stable democracy, has also ⁤seen a rise in protests, particularly surrounding concerns ‍about electoral integrity and the‌ dominance of political dynasties.
