The Scale of the Disaster
Separate weather systems converged last week, unleashing torrential and sustained rainfall across a broad swathe of Southeast Asia. The island nation of Sri Lanka and the Indonesian island of Sumatra were particularly hard hit, alongside parts of southern Thailand and northern Malaysia. The combined death toll across the four countries has reached nearly 1,000, with hundreds more reported missing.
Indonesia is experiencing its deadliest natural disaster as the 2018 Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami, which claimed over 2,000 lives. The current flooding and landslides have resulted in at least 442 confirmed deaths in Indonesia, primarily in the West Sumatra province.
Sri Lanka has reported at least 334 fatalities due to flooding and landslides triggered by Cyclone Ditwah. The government has formally requested international assistance to cope with the scale of the disaster.
Indonesia’s Response and Challenges
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto visited North Sumatra, emphasizing the government’s immediate priority: delivering essential aid to affected communities. He acknowledged the difficulty of reaching isolated villages and announced the deployment of helicopters and aircraft to support relief efforts.
Despite mounting pressure, President Subianto has not yet declared a national emergency or publicly appealed for international assistance. The government has dispatched three warships carrying aid and two hospital ships to the worst-affected areas, but many roads remain impassable, hindering access for emergency responders.

In Sungai Nyalo village, approximately 100km from Padang, the capital of West Sumatra, floodwaters have receded, revealing a landscape coated in thick gray mud. Homes, vehicles, and crops have been extensively damaged.
Sri Lanka Seeks International Aid
Unlike Indonesia, the Sri Lankan government has proactively sought international assistance. Military helicopters are being utilized to reach individuals stranded by the flooding and landslides caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
