Hamburg Doctors Perform Groundbreaking cornea Transplant
Published: april 18, 2025
In a first for northern Germany, surgeons in Hamburg have successfully transplanted an artificial cornea, offering new hope to patients facing blindness. The procedure, performed at asklepios Klinik Nord, marks a notable advancement in ophthalmology and could perhaps benefit thousands who rely on donor corneas.
Innovative Technology offers Hope
The ophthalmology department at Asklepios Klinik Nord-Heidberg utilized an Endoart endothelial prosthesis, manufactured by Eyeyon. This technology addresses a critical need, as an estimated 13 million people globally are on waiting lists for cornea transplants.
The Surgical Procedure
Dr. Joel Lüthy, a senior physician and corneal surgery specialist, led the pioneering intervention.According to Lüthy, the results after four months have been promising, with patients experiencing stable and improved vision. “With this technology, we can help patients who have previously been dependent on donor tissue,” Lüthy said.
How the Artificial Cornea Works
The artificial cornea, constructed from biocompatible acrylate, replicates the function of the natural endothelium. Damage to this layer can cause visual impairment, traditionally treatable only with donor corneas. The new prosthesis allows for a minimally invasive procedure, promoting rapid healing and often leading to a swift betterment in the patient’s quality of life.
Expanding Treatment Options
Prof. Dr. Marc Schargus, chief physician of the eye department, highlighted the importance of this advancement.”This process extends our possibilities considerably, and we are proud to be the only eye clinic in Hamburg that can offer this technology,” Schargus stated.
Extensive Eye Care at Asklepios
The ophthalmology department at Asklepios provides care for patients across three locations in Hamburg, collaborating with various specialist disciplines. The clinic offers both inpatient and outpatient treatment options and maintains partnerships with local ophthalmologists throughout the Hamburg region.
