Chris Panicker, a Senior Designer at Pitchfork and GQ, has been selected as a 2026 ASME Next Award honoree. The recognition is part of the 2026 National Magazine Awards, which honor outstanding achievement by early-career journalists in print and digital media.
The award is granted by the American Society of Magazine Editors to recognize the work of professionals in the early stages of their careers, including designers, editors, and writers.
Career Progression and Design Contributions
Panicker joined Pitchfork as a Designer in 2023. He was later promoted to the position of Senior Designer for both GQ and Pitchfork in 2025.
His work has been integral to the visual identity of Pitchfork, particularly through the development of the publication’s Zines. These projects include editions focused on Dijon, Oklou, Turnstile, and Bladee.
Beyond the Zines, Panicker is responsible for the unique and colorful motion graphics used in the weekly Selects column.
Nomination and Professional Recognition
The nomination for the award was submitted by Keir Novesky, the Global Design Director for GQ, and Pitchfork.
Chris is a genuine anomaly in the media landscape. He consistently takes on projects that are difficult to execute under high-pressure deadlines, maintaining a calm demeanor and a contagiously positive attitude. From his rapid, almost daily production of boundary-pushing Pitchfork Selects designs, to crafting beautiful, hand-made typography for GQ’s most significant issue of the year, Chris has unequivocally solidified his reputation as one of the best designers in the media industry—and he is truly just getting started.

while executing complex projects under strict deadlines.
The ASME Next Awards Framework
Established in 2015, the ASME Next Awards for Journalists Under 30 aim to support the growth of print and digital media by celebrating early-career talent.
The awards are open to a variety of roles, including:
- Graphic designers and photo editors
- Writers and photographers
- Editors and social-media journalists
Eligibility is restricted to freelancers and editorial staffers with no more than seven years of industry experience. Candidates must be associated with a website or magazine edited by a member of the American Society of Magazine Editors and must be nominated or endorsed by an ASME member.
The ASME Next Awards are judged and presented in conjunction with the National Magazine Awards. The National Magazine Awards were established in 1966 to honor publications that demonstrate imaginative art direction, innovative techniques, noteworthy journalistic enterprise, and superior execution of editorial objectives.
